Hello everyone. Thank you for visiting this blog. Today I am going to share some tips for final year students, specifically students who are currently studying in bioinformatics course. However, if you are studying in other courses, you may refer to these tips also. Our focus is on finding the title for final year project (FYP). Without wasting more time, let's get started.
1. Choose the scope of project
For your information, bioinformatics students can choose between full biology, full information technology (IT) or bioinformatics project for FYP. Apart from the three choices, you have to decide between wet lab, dry lab or combination of them. Wet lab means you do experiment at biology lab and you need to deal with chemicals. Dry lab means you conduct research using online resources/computing resources. You can choose based on your interest or your internship/future career planning.
2. Check the available resources for FYP
When conducting research, resources play an important role. Check what resources are available at your university. Do they have enough computing resources? Do the labs are equipped with all the needed machine and reagents? If you need to use online tools for your FYP, make sure you check whether the tools are free to be used. It is better to use free tools because you can save cost. Try to avoid free trial version unless you are really sure that you can finish your work within the specified period. On top of that, your laptop capability also can affect your FYP progress. Based on my observation, the average laptop RAM used by students is 4GB. For better experience, you can use laptop with 8GB RAM.
3. Find out what your supervisor's expertise
Throughout your FYP journey, you have to work with a supervisor. Therefore, it is important to ensure that both of you actually understand about the project. If your supervisor is expert in your FYP project, he/she can give more suggestion for your work. This can avoid you lose track in completing your FYP.
4. Understand your working preferences
Everyone has different working preferences. Some people prefer to work at home. Some people prefer to do work at campus. If you are a person who like to do work alone and at quiet place, it is better to choose project that only use online tools/database. If you don't mind to spend your time at campus, you can go with project that requires you to be at campus such as wet lab project or project using server at campus.
5. Check your daily schedule
Time management is really crucial in completing FYP. If you have tight schedule and limited time to do work at campus, it is advisable for you to choose a project that you can do wherever you are. Bear in mind that, the labs at campus are not accessible for 24 hours. You can only use the resources at the lab during working days and office hours. Therefore, you need to arrange your schedule in such a way that you can have some time to be at the labs.
6. Decide between something familiar or something new
Choosing something familiar means you will have more references for your project but probably there is not much new finding to be done. On the other hand, choosing something new means you have more new things to discover but you may have lack of references. In order to decide between these two, it depends on your yourself. Are you interested to explore more on something new? Are you capable of working without less references?
Honestly, FYP is not easy to be completed. Your first step which is choosing the title will affect the final outcome. Therefore, make sure that you choose your FYP title wisely. I hope the tips given here are useful for you. All the best for your final year project.
