Hello everyone. It’s been a while since I posted an entry on serious topic like this. I miss those days when I have more time to write blog posts. In this entry, we are going to discuss why do we need tertiary education.
Before we go further into the discussion, I will just briefly explain what is the definition of tertiary education. Tertiary education refers to post-secondary education which includes universities, colleges, polytechnics and many more.
Since many school leavers nowadays feel that tertiary education is not important (something we should worry about), I hope that this entry can highlight why tertiary education (will focus more on university) is really crucial.1. Create Networking Opportunities
Doesn’t matter in what field you are in, we need customers/clients to buy our products/services. Business will die without customers. If you are very active in university, you will get the opportunity to know people from different backgrounds which can be your potential customers in the future. You might also get the chance to meet important people in the specific industries through events in university. This may help you to gain support for your future career.
2. Personal Development
Pursuing tertiary education gives us the chance to explore many things including learning many benefical skills through experiences. For most students, they have to be more independent as they are living far away from family. Whether you like it or not, you have to settle all the problems on your own unless you have family members who are 24 hours ready to serve you. You will learn about time management, communication skills, problem solving skills and many more.
3. Get to Know Yourself Better
When you are in your own comfort zone, you tend to stick to your usual habit instead of trying something new. In addition, you might follow the society preferences rather than doing what you actually love to do. Certain people think that you have to work in certain fields only than you are consider successful and will have a stable life. University is just a starting step to your future career. It trains you and allows you to explore the options that you have. It is not a must to work in a field that you studied or follows what people around you are doing.
4. Higher Adaptibility and Tolerance
Getting to know people from various background and out of your circle is a good way to be more adaptable and tolerant. Not everyone will do something they way you do it, not everyone will solve problem the way you solve it and not everyone will have the same opinion as you. Putting yourself in someone’s shoes makes you realise that each of us has our own struggles in life. So, don’t put others in a more difficult situations. There is nothing wrong to be more adapatable and tolerant towards others.
5. Save Yourself from Unbeneficial Activities
If someone really throw themselves into studying, they don’t even have time to take part in unbeneficial activities. Life as a university student is not the same as secondary students. Not only you have to deal with study, but you also have to learn how to survive without some of the privileges that you used to have. For example, no home-cooked meal after you come back from class but you have to go out to buy food or cook it yourself. You also need to do the laundry and clean the room. Apart from that, you will have more commitment financially and wasting money for something unbeneficial is not a good option.
Some people think that tertiary education is not important because many graduates are jobless and some not gaining their expected salary. I don’t agree with that.
For me, I don’t view tertiary education as a way of making a lot of money. I decided to go for tertiary education because I know that knowledge can change how I view the world.
You might wonder why some people do not have the five points that I mentioned above even though they went for tertiaty education. It is not the tertiary education fault but it’s their problems. They chose to waste their university life and lost the opportunity to get invaluable experiences.
Let me know what you think about tertiary education. Is it worth to spend money for it? Is it still relevant nowadays as many people can make money without higher qualification?
See you guys in next entry.
